I wash flannel several times before using but for me, it's mostly because of the lint factor.
I washed 2 bolts of flannel recently before making pj bottoms for the grandchildren. I was amazed that
I got 2 balls of lint the size of a basketball. Incredible.
I always wash before using flannel as there can be as much as 7 % shrinkage. That's a lot.
