Jan, I usually tear off the paper that's in the seam line an inch or so before the joining. That way, there is still some stability without the bulk in the seam and also a guide to sew along. Anael's suggestion of drawing the line is a good one. Here is where I find the clover clips are worth their weight! They just hold the seam line so well where pins tend to push the underside out if line. You're a more experienced quilter than when you first tried y seams, you might find them much easier now.
