I have "machine tied" a quilt and it works really well. Do a few zig zag stitches in the tie location and then lay a piece of yarn, pearl cotton or ribbon over the zigzag, take a couple more stitches then move on to the next location. Tie your choice of yarn, etc in a knot and it looks like you hand tied the quilt.
