I see a lot of crafters doing contemporary designs and I would assume these things move faster and for higher prices because they appeal to urban consumers who might expect to pay the higher prices and would value handmade work because it's not something they're used to.

The only way that I have found to tell what has sold is by looking at a sellers feedback. Etsy doesn't have a completed item section like Ebay does.
