Any one of the above can be hard on the finish and decals on a sewing machine though. That's why sewing machine oil is recommended. It won't harm the finish.

It is rust, we just use the wd-40 to free it up and are careful not to get it on the decals and stuff. We use sewing machine oil after we get it moving again.
