Does he have a favorite sports team? If so, you could do a 2 or 3 color quilt featuring his team's colors, and then perhaps an accent fabric with some of the actual team sport logos. Or, if you can't find that, you may be able to get a local embroidery company to embroider the fabric - perhaps on a jean material - that you can also embed into the quilt.
