My last two quilts for my grandsons were a whole cloth quilt (he went on equilter.com and picked it out with a little help from his mom navigating the site) and a Sock Monkey quilt with big (9" I think) squares of several fabrics set in diagonal rows. He picked Sock Monkeys....so I would suggest that you ask for---or pick---- a theme and go from there. My experience with the boys (I have three grandsons) is that they are really hard on quilts so I try to have as few seams to maybe pull open as possible, meaning that I leave the fabrics in big pieces, and pick great fabrics....
