It really depends on what method you want to do. It will be very difficult for you to do the top stitching if you are doing the final step of binding by machine. If you wanted do the sewing by hand on the back, you will get a much skinner binding and have to do slivers of trimming to get the binding to fold over the 1/4 bulk of the outside seam allowance of the quilt. I worry about how often this quilt will be washed. My great aunt did single fold binding on an antique quilt top I bought from a great great Aunt. It has started to deteriorate even tho I have seldom washed it or exposed it to sunlight. Good Luck. This is a difficult decision to make.
