I have never thought of backing a quilt like this either. One thing though like rag quilts, if you don't have a washer with a lint trap consider taking it to the laundromat. Also I would use the chenille cutter -with a seam ripper you are going to probably five times the work - No way it is going to cut through all of those layers!
