You scared me tooo. My first thought when I read you laid them out on the bed was that you cut your bedspread or comforter! Whew! what a relief. The batting can easily be sewn back together or like you've already posted buy more batting. I don't dare get scissors or a cutter near my bed when laying my top out to see how it looks or fits on my bed, I would definitely be one who might just cut the bed covers.
