This is what I do also, making the strips the width you need, ie; if you need 1" squares, make the strips 1 1/2", etc. and then cutting the strip sets into an equal width. I add even more variety by changing the number of strips in each set, from 3 to 7. Then you can break up the repeat pattern by not only turning the strips around, but also by inserting shorter sections between the longer ones at random intervals.
Just be sure that the fabrics are all different in each set, or at least that the sets don't begin or end with any of the same fabrics or you could end up with 2 the same next to each other.
