You absolutely can do this! No, I don't use batting with fleece backings. The fleece serves as both backing and batting. My favorite part is that batting has rules.....quilt no more than 6" apart, or something like that, but fleece has no rules! It will not shift or bunch or whatever batting does if you break the rules.....so you can quilt it as much or as little as you like. I love making tops and find finishing quilts tedious....so I usually just run a few lines of stitching in both directions (horizontally and vertically) to hold the top to the back, and stop there. My grandsons use their quilts a lot and they get washed a lot, and everything holds up just fine. Good Luck trying this! (PS. I baste top and fleece together with basting spray. Easy and fast.)
