i have always loved this block:

if you draw it out, you will see a secondary pattern emerges if you don't use sashing. the block has components big enough to show off lovely fabrics, and you can plan it so that your "scrappy" look becomes really harmonious, which would be great for using a fat quarter selection.
i have a pile of william morris fabrics that will probably find their home in a windblown square quilt someday soon-ish.
