Is your template the size of the quilt piece with or without seam allowance? I think I would try to cut a really accurate template with the seam allowance added. I would then use my Frixion pen to trace it. (nice fine line and it will be in the seam allowance so you wouldn't even need to iron it off) I would then use a regular rotary cutting ruler to cut right on the line to cut out the shape. Templates are a pain in the butt!
