Trilobal polyester thread of 40wt is used for both embroidery machines and long arm machines. I have seen the only difference is the size of the cone (yardage of thread)
I actually used a floriani embroidery thread to quilt a quilt once

it was the perfect color and I had a full spool...not so much when I was done though.....
BTW, side note, I picked up some glide black....and have to say it is the most luminous black I have ever seen, I really cant wait to get it on fabric to see how it does.
