I'll show you.

There are two ways to do it. I actually did it the harder way by making two different blocks. One was a the one with the chain and the other was a 16 patch.

Like this:
[ATTACH=CONFIG]458714[/ATTACH]

the larger squares start at 2.5" and the smaller ones at 1.5"

But I think the original one that I copied was like this: However, I had started by making 16 patches without planning it out til the end, so I ended up making it like the first one.

Here is another option:

[ATTACH=CONFIG]458715[/ATTACH]

Once again: The larger blocks are 2.5" (to start with) and the smaller are 1.5" (to start with). Make enough and you will end up with a quilt top that looks similar to the one I did with the whites in a little bit different spot.

This second layout makes the quilt like I did, a 9x10 grid, look like this as one possible scenario:
