Is it actual cotton? I've never, ever seen cotton balls in a machine, but plenty of things that looked like what you have there, particularly in cabinets. They've always been spider nests and had small black ones inside or nearby.
I don't bother with spray but I do have a phobia and treat them with a little caution (have a shoe ready)
it's like an actual cotton balls but i didn't bother checking it. i just put it in a plastic bag and trashed it. hopefully there's nothing more left inside my machine.
