I don't use my 1/4" sewing foot ever when I move the needle. It just isn't accurate, and as you said, you can break the needle. I use a clear foot so I can easily see where my fabric is, and it has a zig-zag opening so I don't bread any needles. If you do that PLUS use a straight stitch sewing plate, you'll have good luck. I also use the scant 1/4" seam guide ruler to establish where the edge is when the needle has been moved (or not moved). And then I mark the guide by putting moleskin right up to and abutting the ruler that is under the needle and forming a scant 1/4" border.
