that is going to make a really thick/lofty table runner. you can buy the 'silver fabric' that is used to make ironing board covers- 1 layer of that over a layer of thin cotton batting (like warm & natural) would probably be enough. I use a layer of cotton batting or even a layer of flannel in my table runners- and set pans on them all the time- I've never had any damage to my table...but maybe some tables need a lot more padding between hot dishes & table surface?
