I would try a test sandwich to start. If you have already done that and are ready for your quilt, is the quilt sandwich prepared? Have you basted the 3 layers together for maneuvering it through your machine? I always start free motion quilting in the quilt sandwich about in the middle and work outward. I mentally quarter the quilt and do 1 quarter at a time.
If the top is sashed, I often use my walking foot to stitch in the ditch the straight lines first. Straight lines tend to get distorted while free motion quilting if they are not stitched first.
