If you are handquilting you want to take into consideration those seams. Try to pick a design where you minimize having to sew across the seams. I think that is why often the traditional ones were sewn as suggested 1/4" from the seam. Depending on the size of your hexis and your batting, you probably do not have to do everyone to insure that the batting does not migrate.
