The 401 has a bunch of built in stitches as well as a cams if I remember correctly. I used to have one a couple of years back. To be honest, I liked the 403 better. It was a simpler machine that just took cams for decorative stitches and it was easier to maintain and slightly less bulky. The 401 is a great big fancy machine that is fun though.
