So if it is for family, friends, charity, self or utility, I see no problem. But I would certainly take the extra time and effort if it was for a show or a special project like QoV.
I have always taken pride in my workmanship so I always use a separate fabric for my binding. It could match the border or be an accent. The quilt tells me what it wants. Even for charity quilts, I want to make the quilt look it's best that I can. I don't mind the hand stitching to the back even though sometimes it is quite painful.
