Is it possible the person saying the dues were high was hoping that would deter you? Then when it didn't, she had to go to Plan B - saying your politics were not welcome?
I so hope this is a misunderstanding.
I'm not a writer, but doesn't this sound like a story for someone who wanted to have a quilt guild in their novel?
