I have repaired holes (not as big) but get yarn as close as possible and a yarn needle. Then darn as you would for a hole in socks. By picking up the loose rows and weaving in the yarn it will keep it from running. Then fill in side to side. If you don't like the finished look then you can place a fabric or store bought designed patch over the area. This way no knitting required.
