I've seen two different ways to attach, one from the back and pulled to the front and machine stitched or hand stitch with invisible thread and invisible stitch. The other was for separate pieces of flange were stitched separately to the top and then binding added last and pulled to the back and stitched down.
How did you attach yours?
It's just a folded strip of fabric, laid between the two blocks/quilt pieces that are being sewn together. When you open the pieces the flange is pressed in whichever direction you want it to go. Here's a blog that shows it -
