My tin lizzie drives me nuts every tme I use it. It races when it first starts up. Now it doesn't stop when I stop moving using the lizzie stitch. I don't own a TL, but I can tell you that what you're describing sounds like a problem with the switches you use to start and stop, or the electronics that the switches control. I would definitely contact your dealer or Tin Lizzy.
Having to reach back to shut it off when it's out of control (you can't stop it otherwise) is detrimental to your quilts and you can be hurt as well.
