I use a Sue Pellard Designs Leaves Galore Applique Template - Grande. It has two sizes of nice swoops to use for vines. I mark it on the border, usually with the purple disappearing pen, or chalk on a dark fabric. I usually quilt that line first, then go back to put in the leaves, but sometimes just do one pass for vine and leaves.
