I've always been told that if the thread begins to fray and it isn't due to using a crummy thread (you know the kind that are 10 for $1), the first thing to do is check the size of the needle. Try a bigger needle and see if that helps. I hope that is it and it isn't a tension problem. Those tend to drive me insane and I don't wish that on anyone else!
