This is called a Cathedral Window. It is made using a large square of folded fabric. The edges are folded and stitched down around a smaller colored square. This is many times done by hand by can be done by machine. You are right, there is no batting in the quilt. The heaviness is due to all the folding. This type of quilt is a classic!
