Cathy,

This takes the CC or 1221 or 40F1 needle which is 1.8mm shorter than the 15x1. The needle-bar is very easy to raise. I did this back in January on 7 Free-Westinghouse machines so that they would sell at the huge rummage sale I volunteer at. Very nice machines. I have a gold one and a black one, both are using 15x1 needles now.
