I don't know the name of the pattern, but as Paper Princess said, it looks like a variation on the Hunter Star block. The only difference is the corner pieces are cut at a 90 degree angle (HST) instead of 45 degrees....
Of course that doesn't help you if you have your heart set on the applique part.
