Default Bernina 550 QE for piecing??

Does anyone use a Bernina 550QE for piecing? How do you get on with it?

I have tried piecing on mine (new schmetz needle of appropriate type and size, single hole throat plate, metler thread) and always, always the fabric shifts with the top layer ending up longer than the bottom layer. I have tried pressing and starching, everything I can think of (google). I came to the conclusion that I must just be a bad piecer.

Today, after time consuming cutting, piecing (then squaring up again due to fabric shifting) I decided that if I continue on the 550 I would end up with a project that I would want to throw away. Instead of giving up I decided to get out my Bernina 930 (1985 machine). As soon as I started to piece I noticed the difference, it was perfect! Each stitch was so certain and the fabric fed through the machine evenly and was perfectly aligned at each end.

My question is, is the Bernina 550 QE not that great for piecing or could it be a problem with my machine that needs looking at (I realise it could still be me but I am not so sure after getting such great results with the older machine). It is quite a long trip to my local dealer and if this is how the machines are I will just get on with it but if this is not how they are then I will make the journey.
