This is a wild thought that just popped into my head. Pull the top off the machine, then rotate the hand wheel and look close at the big fiber gear. Make sure there are no broken teeth on it. If kept properly cleaned and lubed they are almost indestructible ...... almost.
500s are not the quietest machines but they shouldn't make the noise you described.
