I wish I had the name but there was a GREAT book on the history of quilts coming over on the oregon trail.. and the book on the civil war quilts history is facinating both have pictures and the letters are true story tellers. Definetely see if you can check those out of the library. I recall BOTH were paperbacks.
I think the one of the Oregon Trail is by Sandra Dallas "The Quilt That Walked to Golden". It is a beautifully produced book with stories of women who made quilts, travelled overland to the west and raised families. There are lots of pictures, too.
