I got my membership at the age of 10 on a treadle machine of my grandmothers. It happened right after my mom said be careful. Went through nail and all. I did not feel any pain and just sat there wondering if I had the nerve to call my mom...my sweet great aunt was there and she knew immediately and came over and talked very calmly and said to sit real still and she got the needle out of my finger and then I went and told my mom. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. They poured hydrogen peroxide on it and tincture of iodine and Grandma had the wonderful slave that was called King Pain Salve. They slathered that on it and wrapped it up and then it really started throbbing. No pain though when it was pinned to the machine with the needle lol but after a lot of pain.
However, it was a good lesson because it hasn't happened again and I used to make my clothes so there was plenty of opportunity.
