I was reading a quilt book the other day (sorry, have no clue which) and the author said to use hairspray on the area you are going to stencil, use the chalk and then use hairspray again. Let it dry and go to the next area. I have never done this but it sounds great if you are going to wash the quilt when finished (which was suggested).
