I think that you will find that the 6-spoke balance wheel predates the 9-spoke balance wheel. The 9-spoke came later, after the
hand attachment boss had been added to castings (incorrectly referred to as a “motor boss” - they made motor mounts later to fit the “hand attachment” boss).
