I love scrappy quilts (with a passion) but I would still pick yardage. I just don't really like fat quarters very much; the size just seems awkward to me. I buy a lot of half-yard fabric pieces, that's my version of a fat quarter. That way if I decide to do a big block quilt I can get at least three 12" squares out of my piece of fabric, plus some nice sized scraps.
