I'm risking the same thing this fall when I make my mom a bedspread size quilt for her 90th birthday. She is getting dementia and can be child-like critical at times. This is not how she was until recently however, so know it is part of her aging process. In other words, she tells it like it is. If she doesn't like it, she will tell you. I know she loves me and will be honored I made something for her, will show it to her friends (if she remembers, sigh), but if she thinks it's too warm or too big or too bold, she will probably tell me. The lap quilt I made her for Christmas 2012 is still draped over the back of her recliner, probably unused, but in a place of honor.
