Needle height will cause skips.
I use a singer 31-15 for free motion quilting by the use of the P2 attachment by Janome, which is high shank and making it an open toe so needle does not strike it. Here is the link to video showing how well it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNUkMBT54lc this is a motorized machine
