I use the non- slip/skid shelving. I just cut a strip and place it length wise or width wise across the material under the ruler. Strip may only be about an inch wide. Just move the strip around. I usually keep the non-slip toward the outside 1-1 1/2" of the ruler edge. That way it allows the ruler to lay flat.

I back all my rulers and acrylic templates with Omnigrid's InvisiGRIP. For added measure, when I think I need it, I will also attach a Gypsy Gripper to the top side of the ruler. I've heard about some quilters using rug backing material to keep their rulers from sipping but I could never figure out how you could successfully cut when your ruler wasn't lying completely flat against the fabric.
