i hand sew when it just get to crazy to do it by machine.
i think the biggest tip i can give for Y seams is to mark the fabric or pattern with all the 1/4 seam lines.
then don't stitch to the end - stop at the intersection with the needle down.
then lift up the presser foot with the needle down and move the fabric onto the next section to complete the Y seam.
