I completely agree with this. Not only will you have a plan, but a sample block will allow you to make mistakes (and come back here to ask questions) at no cost to your valuable jelly rolls. I have found that making a sample block allows me to feel much more confident about cutting and sewing the rest of the fabric/blocks.
