I believe that that smooth bottom is indeed a detachable (plastic?) tray.
The lower picture is probably a machine that was taken out of a cabinet, which is why it had no tray.
If authenticity isn't important, a reasonably competent woodworker could make a tray very easily, or perhaps modify a cabinet into a table-top base.
