I would cut a small piece (maybe 6" square), measure it, run it through the washer and dryer, and see how it comes out. If it shrinks a lot but still looks good, I would simply preshrink it before using it for batting. If it comes out all puckered or shrivelled, I wouldn't use it for a quilt backing. Asssuming it passes the wash/dry test, suiting material could be quite nice for a backing fabric as it would probably cling to the bed, not slip and slide around on you.
