This is one of those questions with no right answer. Most machines will sew with most threads, provided the right needle is used, the sewing machine is clean and oiled (if required), the bobbin is properly wound, and the tension is correctly set. Some threads generate more lint than others, and all cotton threads generate some lint, but cleaning the machine will take care of that problem. I prefer a thin thread, such as Bottomline, for piecing, but I have pieced with thicker cotton threads as well. Of course you want to make sure that your thread has not deteriorated with age, and that it isn't nubby. Some serger threads are not very strong, but others are fine. Some people prefer poly, others will only use cotton. So... no right answer.
