I would recommend a rail fence. You can google rail fence quilt...no, wait I will. I'll attach a link here. I was starting to say you could get the pattern free by googling, but just decided to do that. These aren't the only free ones out there, just two I picked. I'll also attach a picture of one I made, because if you are a real beginner like I was, the names of patterns were Greek to me.
At any rate, I hope you enjoy your new hobby. Warning! It is addictive.
