I have made that quilt a few times and always add borders. I just sew and go I don't make large quilts so I can use my DSM to quilt them. I don't measure I just sew to each side and trim down as I press out. I also don't do mitered corners. I do however just starch the fabric like crazy it can almost stand on its own. Good luck.
