I think it depends on the pattern somewhat, but 12" blocks are quite common. Do you mean that all the squares will be solid pieces of fabric? If so it might still work, but would depend on whether the fabrics blend together well enough. Scrappy quilts tend to look better when the pieces are smaller than 12" square.
